- As for Mum herself, she had never remarried nor dated anyone. Always quite religious and now retired, Mum now spent her time as part of some church committee that was little more than a congregation of Karens, God-fearing, bible-thumping zealots who looked for -- and found -- sin and hedonism in every facet of modern society, gaining much pleasure from discussing how the sinners and hedonists would be judged and punished.
- All of this had caused Mum to fall out with her own sister -- with whom she had previously been close -- and Courtney and I dreaded having to spend time with her. This would be inevitable next weekend as the following Sunday would be Mother's Day. Neither my sister nor I were looking forward to this, Courtney especially given the events at Christmas, where Mum thought her daughter's skirt which came to just above Courtney's knees was too short and lectured her about sin and immorality, as though Courtney was dressed like up like a street walker.
